The desired results are a series of tools and methodologies for Adverse Drug Events (ADE) risk assessment, prevention of ADE’s and less tangible results such as a more proactive participation of patients and prevention of errors will also sprout from PSIP. The outcomes can be divided in two categories: material and immaterial. Material: The main material outcome of PSIP will be Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), recent studies have confirmed the capacity of this system to improve clinical practice and patient outcome. The success of CDSS depends on four characteristics associated with the content of decision support itself and with the user active interaction process and interface: • System-initiated interventions, • Assistance without user control over output, • Systems with automatic data retrieval from electronic medical records and • Systems providing corollary actions in Computerised Provider Order Entry (CPOE). The CPOE can provide patient-specific clinical decision support, such as recommendations customized to individual patients with stored “best practice” rules. Allergy and drug interaction checking must be included as well as triggers for protocol-based interventions. Effective decision support involves not only alerting the provider about a potential error, but providing a correct alternative option as well. This implies that the contextualisation of CDSS will be based on the characteristics of the patient but also the epidemiological characteristics of the local population. Immaterial: The immaterial outcomes are fruit of thorough research and analysis. The editing of statistical analysis and reports on identifiable ADE’s through data and semantic mining will allow us to make great progress in risk assessment and prevention of error. The outcome regarding medical staff and patients is connected with the management of medication information, recently international boards have developed a new package insert that provides the most up-to-date information in an easy-to-read format that draws the physician’s and patients’ attention to the most important pieces of drug information before a product is prescribed. In the PSIP project, this information will be designed to be contextualised when accessible through the CPOE-CDSS platform. |
